New Crash Test Shows The 'Smart Car' Is A Safe Car

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ― Chelsea Roarback wanted a car with great gas mileage, so she bought the eye-catching Smart Car Fortwo. It's a fun ride, but that wasn't her top priority.

"Safety was a concern for me and my family as well, but I did a lot of research on them before I bought it,' said Roarback.

The entry-level Smart Fortwo Pure earned top ratings in the most recent crash tests.

"People want to know if this small car is safe. And the answer is they've made it about as safe as you can, given the package," said Adrian Lund of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The institute gives the Smart Fortwo a top rating of "good" in front and side impact crashes. It gets an "acceptable" rating for rear crashes.

"The Smart could improve the amount of protection it's giving its occupants for their necks in these rear impacts. And that's even more important again because it is a smaller car," said Lund.

The Smart's standard equipment includes side airbags and electronic stability control.

"Families need to keep that in mind when they are buying a vehicle to save some money on gasoline, they've still got to remember that their main point is to get from Point A to Point B safely," said Lund.
