Kaing Guek Eav, known as Duch (pronounced DOIK), is the first high-ranking member of Cambodia's ousted regime to be tried for war crimes at a U.N.-backed tribunal. Judges are expected to issue a ruling and sentence early next year. The tribunal is seeking justice for an estimated 1.7 million people who died from execution, overwork, disease and malnutrition as a result of the ultra-communist group's policies while in power from 1975-79. He faces a maximum penalty of life in jail as Cambodia has no death penalty.

World Markets Rally As Gold Hits New Record High

World markets rose sharply Monday amid further hopeful signs about the economic recovery. It docked Monday on the Neva River, about 1 kilometer (.6 miles) from the Hermitage museum. Russian officials are considering buying a Mistral ship and a license to build several others — their first such purchase from a NATO country.

Gunfire At Home Of US Teachers In Indonesia's Aceh

Gunfire hit the home of two American lecturers in Indonesia's western province of Aceh on Monday, but no one was injured.
