Belongings Of Last U.S. Titanic Survivor Auctioned
SHREWSBURY, Mass. (AP) ―
Items belonging to the last American survivor of the Titanic are being auctioned off in England.
Lillian Asplund was 5-years-old when the Titanic sank off Newfoundland in 1912, killing more than 1,500. Asplund died two years ago at age 99 after a life trying to avoid publicity about the disaster. She told a friend that it was bad karma to talk about it.
Asplund's family was returning from their native Sweden on the Titanic.
Among the items at auction Saturday in Devizes, England, is a gold watch with the hands frozen at 2:19, about the time the Titanic went down.
Other items include an emigration order and family rings, photographs and letters. The collection is estimated at $200,000.
