Two puppies found abandoned in a dumpster in Monterey County over the weekend are in the care of the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and investigators are offering a $1,000 reward in the case.
The puppies were found Sunday afternoon in a dumpster next to a Wells Fargo Bank at the Stone Creek Village Shopping Center in Del Rey Oaks.
A man heard whimpering coming from inside the trash receptacle, found the puppies inside and brought them to the SPCA on state Highway 68 at about 3 p.m., SPCA Lt. Danielle Scheid said.
The puppies, 7-week-old mixed breeds named Sadie and Lulu by SPCA staff, are in good condition but Sadie has a large scar on her head from a previous injury, Scheid said.
"The puppies are acting very, very sweet," she said.
The SPCA is not yet looking for homes for the puppies; first they want to find out who left them in the dumpster.
"Whoever did this could easily have driven another five minutes and surrendered the puppies to us, no questions asked," said Beth Brookhouser, the SPCA's director of community outreach.
The center is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the responsible party.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the SPCA at (831) 373-2631 or (831) 422-4721 ext. 213. All calls are confidential.
