Loose Cows Shut Down Highway 4 In Contra Costa Co.

CONTRA COSTA CO. (BCN) ― All lanes of state Highway 4 near Interstate 680 in unincorporated Contra Costa County were reopened at about 11:15 p.m. Thursday after loose cattle were cleared from the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A rancher with a trailer carrying 10 calves was driving eastbound on the highway when the rear door of the trailer opened and one of the calves fell out, CHP Officer Tom Stewart said.

As the rancher stopped his vehicle shortly before 8:30 p.m., the rest of the cows escaped the trailer and ran frantically onto the roadway, according to Stewart.

At least three, possibly four traffic collisions occurred, and at least three cows were killed, Stewart said.

A Sig-alert was issued at 9:40 p.m. and Highway 4 was closed to traffic in both directions until the roadway was cleared around 11:15 p.m., Stewart said.

In addition to the CHP, Martinez Police and the Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
