Tree Sitters Defiant As Berkeley Cuts Down Grove
BERKELEY (AP) ―
The University of California, Berkeley has nearly finished felling a disputed grove of trees to make way for a sports center as four protesters remain perched in one of the last trees standing.
University spokesman Dan Mogulof said arborists had removed 35 of 42 trees Saturday and expected to finish cutting down all but the lone occupied redwood Sunday.
Tree-sitters have occupied the grove for about 21 months as opponents of the planned $125 million sports center sued to block the project.
The university began cutting down trees Friday, a day after a state appeals court denied a request from two citizens groups for an injunction barring construction.
Mogulof said campus officials are continuing to negotiate with the protesters as the project gets under way.
