Cal Berkeley Student Found Dead After Graduation
BERKELEY (BCN) ―
A 22-year-old man was found dead on a city sidewalk Saturday, one day after graduating from the University of California at Berkeley, a Berkeley police lieutenant confirmed Sunday.
At 6:22 a.m., police were notified of a man who was not breathing on the sidewalk in front of a three-story apartment building at 2605 Durant Ave.
Fire personnel arrived and pronounced the victim, Alan Hamai, dead at the scene.
Berkeley police Lt. Craig Juster said the cause of death is under investigation, but that there is a "likelihood" Hamai fell off the roof of the apartment building.
Berkeley homicide detectives are investigating the case.
"At this point in time, we just know he went out and had returned
between 2 and 3 in the morning," Juster said. "Anytime there are no witnesses, we want to make sure we cover all the bases to make sure there is no foul play."
According to the Alameda County coroner's bureau, an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
Hamai, who majored in Anthropology, was from Redondo Beach.
