Study: Unlicensed Stories Reel In Internet Readers

REDWOOD CITY (AP) ― Here's another reason for ailing newspaper and magazine publishers to wince: A new study shows that on average, the audience perusing unauthorized online copies of their articles is nearly 1.5 times larger than the readership on their own Web sites.

The study was done by Attributor, which makes software that trolls the Internet for copyright violations.

The Redwood City-based company says, though, that the problem could turn into a golden opportunity if media companies can mine advertising revenue from their pirated stories posted on blogs and other sites.

Attributor says it's working with media companies that could generate more than $1 million in annual advertising by enforcing their online copyrights.
