Whether you are looking for used furniture or trying to sell an old car, chances are you're going to the most popular online Classifieds website Craigslist. But now, there's competition from an unlikely place,
Walmart.com.
Company spokesperson Ravi Jariwala tells Consumerwatch that Walmart.com Classifieds is a free service in BETA, meaning it's being tested.
"We recently launched Walmart.com Classifieds beta to provide additional opportunities for our customers to save money and live better," said Jariwala. "This free, community-based resource allows customers to buy and sell items locally, find local jobs, and learn about events in their area. It also further connects our community of 130 million customers who shop the Wal-Mart brand each week."
Here's what Cresencio Ortega searches for online, "Tires, rims for cars, autoparts... I look on Craigslist. Would I use Walmart.com? Sure. Everyone's trying to save money. If there is a new way to do it i'd try it."
Greta Moss says she just doesn't see Wal-mart as a community gathering place. So she packs up Father's Day cookout supplies with no desire to go online for that used bbq.
"It's just that it's Wal-mart. They have a monopoly on everything. I do shop here a lot, but I'm not so sure to go as far as going on line," said Moss.
Wal-Mart.com Classifieds is actually hosted by another ad posting service called Oodle.com, based in San Mateo. Oodle makes money if you pay to get your ad posted as a top result. Oodle and Wal-mart.com would not disclose details of the partnership.
