Students Rising Above: About Us

(CBS 5) Students Rising Above (SRA) is a CBS 5 and CBS5.com series of news stories, web features, and public service announcements, profiling low-income, at-risk Bay Area high school seniors who are overcoming tremendous obstacles. More than half of them are growing up without parents and many have been homeless. All of these students are low income- 75% live below the federal poverty line. All of them want to go to college.

Wendy Tokuda has been reporting these stories for more than 10 years, and brought the project here to CBS5 in 2007. Over the years, viewers have donated more than $4 million to the Students Rising Above Scholarship Fund. Also, volunteers have grown the project into a non-profit organization which provides mentors, financial counseling, computers, sheets and towels for the dorm and other support normally provided by parents.  The goal is not just to give them a check, but to get them through college.

The Students Rising Above television series has won numerous awards, including the Peabody Award, a National Emmy for Public Service, the NAB Education Foundation 'Service To America' Award, the national Sigma Delta Chi Award for Public Service in Television Journalism, and several Northern California Emmy Awards.
