Tevah El Emmett: Rapper Goes Green

Organic meets the inner city!

OAKLAND (CBS 5) ― It threw me off, the first time I really started listening to his lyrics about organic food, carpooling, and using less water. He is like Al Gore's secret weapon in the inner city!

Raised by a single mom in West Oakland, he's seen the rough side of life.

For a time, he lived with his father in a basement in Philadelphia, and they  truly struggled to stay afloat. They had no refrigerator, no shower, or real beds, and hung a tarp over the cracks in the door to keep out the cold in winter. he was often alone much of the time.

"The basement really got me down", he said. "I stopped being creative. I wasn't interested in anything anymore. My grades started slipping.. I didn't hve a sense of purpose."

Back in Oakland now, he is having to become a man, without his father at home.

"It's kind of like building a house without a blueprint or ever having seen a house before", he said.

But his spark and imagination are back and working. Tevah's mother has opened his world far beyond the boundaries of his neighborhood, and going to college has always been an expectation.
