San Jose Earthquakes Beat DC United, 2-1

SANTA CLARA (AP) ― Arturo Alvarez and Darren Huckerby scored to help the San Jose Earthquakes continue their MLS playoff push with a 2-1 victory over DC United on Saturday night.

The Earthquakes (7-9-7) extended their unbeaten streak to eight games and won for the fourth straight time at home, this time before a crowd of 10,121. San Jose moved into fourth place in MLS, just two points behind second-place Real Salt Lake.

Santino Quaranta scored for DC United (10-11-2), which remained in a fourth-place tie with New York in the East.

Alvarez gave San Jose a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute after Huckerby stole the ball along the left sideline, shot toward the middle and fed a wide-open Alvarez in front of the net. Alvarez beat goalkeeper Louis Crayton with a low shot into the right corner.

Huckerby, a key element of the Earthquakes' surge since signing with the team on July 14, scored in the 62nd minute. He took Scott Sealy's feed and banged a right-footed shot past Crayton, just inside the left post.

Quaranta pulled United to 2-1 in the 76th minute.

San Jose caught D.C. United short-handed as captain Jaime Moreno the team's second-leading goal scorer was playing for the Bolivian National Team in a World Cup qualifier. Also, leading scorer Luciano Emilio and midfielder Joe Vide were two of eight injured players who were sidelined.

Defender Bryan Namoff missed the game, too, suspended after drawing too many yellow cards.
