Quakes Beat Wizards 2-1 On Huckerby's Late Goal

SAN JOSE (AP) ― Darren Huckerby scored in the 84th minute Saturday night to lift San Jose past Kansas City 2-1 and out of last place in the Western Conference for the first time all season.

Arturo Alvarez also scored for the expansion Earthquakes, whose seven-game unbeaten streak (3-0-4) has pushed them one point ahead of Colorado.

Francisco Lima began the deciding play by chipping the ball to Ryan Johnson inside the penalty area. Johnson headed the ball to an onrushing Huckerby, who slammed it home near the goal line.

The Wizards had tied the score in the 64th minute on Davy Arnaud's goal on a low crossing pass from Michael Harrington.

Kansas City had a tantalizing scoring opportunity in the 90th minute, but Chance Myers scuffed a chance to knock in a rebound from Roger Espinoza's shot.
