Onetime Heisman hopeful and likely first round NFL draft pick Jahvid Best has been released from Highland Hospital after a frightful fall on his neck and back while leaping into the end zone for a touchdown against Oregon State.

Doctors say Best suffered a serious concussion when he was knocked unconscious, but CT scans and X-rays show no permanent damage.

Dr. Susan Lewis, a sports medicine specialist at St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco, said what makes things worse is that Best suffered a minor concussion the week before.

"There's new research that almost shows an exponential response to the brain, and perhaps much more long term significant injury that you may not even know about now, but it will show up later," said Lewis.

Lewis said successive concussions seem to cause cumulative damage.

That's why football teams take blows to the head so much more seriously than they used to. Best will sit out at least one game, but Lewis said the real question is what effects will he see 10 to 30 years from now.
