A Bay Area high school senior who started fishing after he suffered four broken ribs and a burst kidney in a rugby accident is $100,000 richer after winning an online fishing tournament.
Eighteen-year-old John Yandell of Concord's De La Salle High School received the money this week after playing the FLW Outdoors fantasy fishing online game for the first time.
Yandell picked four of the top 10 finishers in last week's National Guard Open bass tournament near Charlotte, N.C. He beat out hundreds of thousands of online competitors worldwide.
Yandell was playing for the De La Salle rugby team two years ago when he was hit on his left side, resulting in the broken ribs and burst kidney. Doctors kept him in a coma for three days to help him heal after surgery.
