2008 American League MVP Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox called his hometown of Woodland a "dump" in a recent magazine interview. But some people are standing by their hometown hero.
Pedroia's comments are rounding Woodland bases, from first the Mayor's office to the local paper, to Dustin's own family's tire business in town.
In an interview with Boston Magazine, Dustin said of his hometown: "It's a dump. You can quote me on that."
He went on to say, "Everyone wants to get out of there. Nobody wants to stay in Woodland. What do you want to stay in Woodland for? The place sucks."
But Pedroia has given back to the community. When he won the American League Rookie of the Year in 2007, he chose Woodland Little League as his charity of choice to receive $25,000, which is now home to 'Dustin Pedroia Field.'
City officials are still working to include Dustin in a city parade.
Older brother, Brett, who has been accused of child molestation, thinks Dustin's comment may stem from the allegations he dealt with.
But the feedback coming in to the city's newspaper, the Daily Democrat, is scathing.
"Lot of comments," said Editor Jim Smith of the Daily Democrat.
And many of Dustin's biggest fans, who have watched him grow up through little league on to American League Rookie of the year, most valuable player, and World Series champ can't figure it out.
"I don't know why he'd say that, I wouldn't want to show my face," said Carlos, a Woodland resident.
