San Mateo's Bay Meadows Fades Into History

SAN MATEO (AP) ― Bay Meadows was a busy place as thousands of people showed up to see the last day of horse racing at the track.

More than 10,000 people—well above the weekend average of 4,000 -- swarmed into the San Mateo track Sunday for the final day of racing.

The 74-year-old race track is due to be torn down to make way for a development project that includes 83 acres of housing, office and retail space.

Bay Meadows has plenty of racing history. It was home to the longest-running stakes event in California—the Bay Meadows Handicap—captured twice by Seabiscuit.

Russell Baze became the sport's winningest jockey in 2006 when he rode to his 9,531th victory at Bay Meadows.
