The selection process began Thursday for those who wish to carry the Olympic torch for the San Francisco stretch of the 2008 Olympic Torch Relay, according to the mayor's office of communications.
Bay Area residents who want to participate in the Aug. 9 relay - the only North American stop before the Olympic Games begin in Beijing - must submit an application essay of 200 words or less describing their qualifications, the mayor's office reported.
Applicants are asked to answer several questions such as: What sustains you on your personal journey for excellence? How is your personal journey making your community, your country and the world more sustainable? What are you doing to contribute to San Francisco's sustainable journey? And why should you be considered to carry the Olympic Torch in San Francisco?
All applications must be turned in by Feb. 3 for collection by San Francisco city officials. Qualified candidates will then be forwarded to the Beijing Organizing Committee for final determination, according to the mayor's office.
Details, rules and regulations of the competition, along with applications can be found online at
www.sustainablejourney.org. Applications can also be faxed to (415) 693-0584 or mailed to Sustainable Journey, P.O. Box 410990 .660, San Francisco, 94114.
After the lighting of the flame in Olympia, Greece, on Mar. 24, the torch will begin traveling the globe on Apr. 1, stopping in 22 international cities including San Francisco before returning to China, according to the mayor's office.
The opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics is scheduled for Aug. 8.
