State Dept. Denies Condi Rice Interest In 49er Job

WASHINGTON (CBS 5) ― The U.S. State Department on Monday denied a report that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is considering a high-level job with the San Francisco 49ers after her work with the Bush Administration concludes in January.

Spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters at the daily State Department briefing that while Rice will be headed back to the Bay Area, she plans to return to Stanford University — where she served as provost from 1993 to 1999, before going to work for President Bush as national security advisor eight years ago.

The NFL Network reported that the 49ers had expressed an interest in Rice as a possible candidate for team president.

"If she's interested in talking to us, I'm interested in talking to her," the NFL Network quoted one high-ranking 49ers official as saying.

Rice had reportedly expressed a desire as recently as last week to friends and family in being an NFL team president, and NFL Network also cited her long and documented interest in football.

The 49ers organization sidestepped questions involving Rice, with team spokesman Aaron Salkin telling the San Jose Mercury News, "We don't respond to rumors."

Rice is said to be close friends with former 49ers player and current league director of football operations Gene Washington
