Bay Area Companies Look to Hire Despite Recession
FAIRFIELD (CBS 5 / KCBS) ―
Despite the state's record high unemployment rates, some Bay Area companies ranging from amusement parks to high-tech firms are looking to hire and fill positions.
In Vallejo, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is looking to fill 1,600 openings at their theme park.
"In park would be retail, rides, games and food, but we also have positions that are like warehouse, security, health prevention and marketing," said spokeswoman Nancy Chan.
Six Flags hoped to have a good number of those positions filled during a job fair that was held in Fairfield on Saturday.
Chan said it's seasonal work which is often filled by teenagers looking for summer jobs, but indicated that the company this year expected to have many positions filled by adults due to the economy.
But Six Flags isn't the only place looking for a few good men and women to work.
On the peninsula, Rosewood Sand Hill Hotel is getting ready to open its doors for the first time on April 2nd. Located near Stanford University Campus, the hotel is hosting a job fair on Sunday, February 8 at the Menlo Park Burgess Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first two hours are reserved for Menlo Park residents only, afterwards it's fair game.
"We expect to have a deep and talented group of people to come and join our team," said Michael Casey, a spokesman for the hotel.
Kohl's department store is also opening a new location in Alameda in April and is looking for fill 150 positions.
A number of high-tech companies, including Google, Cisco and Genetech are also looking to add a few more employees.
