Fans of San Francisco's Rainbow Grocery said they've found their pot of gold in the phone book; a series of 20% off coupons that are redeemable for anything in the store. The promotion is so popular, page 31 of the Yellow Pages is getting harder and harder to find.
The Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco has long been popular with consumers seeking fresh, locally grown produce, fair trade coffee, and every kind of vitamin under the sun. But now, the worker-owned cooperative has a new crop of clients: bargain hunters lured by 20% off coupons found in the phone book.
The store began putting coupon pages in the Yellow Pages five years ago, as it struggled to build a clientele at its current location in the city's Mission district. Since then, the coupon page has become a hot commodity, and often go missing from phone books found in public libraries and in other public locations. Catherine Norwood of San Francisco asks her friends for their coupons.
"I spend a ridiculous amount on food in general, so I think I'm probably saving as much as $40 a pop," Norwood said.
Coupon shopping is making a comeback all over the country. Redemption rates are up about 30% in the past six months.
