Local job fairs are attracting four times more job seekers than in the past. Thousands show up for a couple hundred positions. At a recent job faire in San Mateo hosted by Hiring Frenzy, 2500 applicants showed up with resumes and personal pitches.
CBS 5 recorded a few of those pitches and showed them to Sara Menke, hiring expert and founder of San Francisco's Premier Staffing, INC. Watch our video report to see see how Menke rewords pitches to make them more powerful.
Menke said the most common mistake people make is using negative words like "problem," "issue," and "concern." She said people who have been in the same job for years should sell that as an asset while demonstrating how their specific roles could fit into a variety of other industries. And for those who have jumped around performing contract work, she said, highlight the different companies that you've gained experience in.
Employers are coming to Premier Staffing requesting fewer job candidates. But, 5-10 positions do come up on a daily basis in administrative, financial services, and sales. Instead of 2 weeks to land a position, it might take 2 months. But the bottom line is, employers are hiring. And they are focusing their picks on people who can boost the bottom line with specific skill sets and positive energy.
