9th Annual SF Indie Film Fest: Rocchi's Picks

By James Rocchi

CBS 5 Film Critic

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ― If you're looking for something different on the big screen, you're in luck -- the 9th annual San Francisco Independent Film Festival opens this weekend and runs until Feb. 20.

Featuring films from around the world, The San Francisco Independent Film Festival is a great chance to see everything from foreign drama to off-kilter comedies and dramas made right here in the Bay Area.

Some of the most big-name selections?

Inland Empire
The newest -- and, some say, weirdest -- film from independent film icon David Lynch (Eraserhead, Blue Velvet). Shot on digital video, it follows a struggling actress through a bizarre journey.

Fido
A sweet-but-slightly-sinister comedy ... with zombies. In a placid, Pleasantville-like 1950's town, a boy and his pet zombie (played by comedian Billy Connolly) become best of friends despite their differences ... and ravenous undead blood lust.

Rolling
A mockumentary about dance-and-drug culture in Los Angeles that follows a sprawling cast of characters through one long, crazed night of Ecstasy ... and agony.

The Hawk is Dying
A drama starring Paul Giamatti (Sideways, The Illusionist) as a Florida man whose hobby of falconry becomes harder -- and more necessary -- as he tries to untangle the entanglements and troubles of his life.

The 9th Annual San Francisco Independent Film Festival also features great events like the annual themed "The Big Lebowski" party; for information about all the films, show times and tickets, you can just go to sfindie.com.
