The Devil's Slide tunnel, scheduled to open in 2010, is one step closer to bearing the name of the late U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos following action Monday by the state Assembly Transportation Committee.
The committee approved a resolution by state Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco/San Mateo that would name the tunnel the "Tom Lantos Tunnel at Devil's Slide."
"No one single person is more responsible for this important project coming to fruition than Congressman Tom Lantos," Yee said in a statement.
"For over three decades, many San Mateo County residents and civic leaders have worked tirelessly to see this project become a reality and protect pristine coastal land from being paved over," Yee said.
Lantos secured $150 million in federal funding toward the $272 million cost of the project. The tunnel will bypass a steep, unstable section of state Highway 1 between Pacifica and Montara that is regularly closed because of rockslides.
Lantos, 80, died of cancer in February. He represented northern San Mateo County and southern San Francisco in Congress for more than a quarter-century. A native of Hungary, he was the only Holocaust survivor to have served in Congress.
