Measure B: S.Bay BART Extension Approved By Voters
SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / KCBS) ―
The Measure B sales tax to help extend Bay Area Rapid Transit to San Jose and Santa Clara finally passed as ballot counting concluded more than two weeks after the election, officials said Friday afternoon.
With the final ballots counted, the quarter-cent sales tax received the two-thirds margin it needed to pass, according to the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters.
The measure had appeared headed for defeat on election night, but as absentee ballots were tabulated, the gap narrowed. Then the counting of the provisional ballots began, which brought a strong surge in favor of the proposal.
Measure B would pay for the operation and maintenance of the $6 billion, 16-mile extension from Fremont to Santa Clara. But passage hasn't sealed the deal just yet, as it still needs federal grants of up to $750 million.
