It's the week before the election, and police say incidents of "political vandalism" are on the rise in the Bay Area. Two of the victims, who live in homes with "Yes on Prop 8" signs, awoke to find their homes spray-painted by vandals in San Jose.
Kelly and Tom Byrne were shocked to find out that someone spray-painted "NO on 8" on their car, on their garage and on their neighbor's garage. They assume it was reaction to the "Yes on Prop 8" sign in their yard.
"It's spitefulness because someone doesn't agree with you," said Kelly.
"I can't think of a way that is more counter-productive, or against those kinds of beliefs than coming and damaging someone's personal property, trespassing, and really showing a message of hate," said Tom.
San Jose police said they've seen a recent up tick in so-called "political vandalism" surrounding Prop 8 in recent weeks.
"People are passionate about the issue, but we just ask that they make their points in the voting booth, not on other people's houses. If they're caught, they could be arrested for felonies. That should be a concern to them," said Sgt. Mike Sullivan.
The "NO on 8" campaign released a statement condemning the incident, and saying activities of this kind are in no way related to the campaign.
