Calif. Democrats Sidetrack Pro-Tibet Resolution
SACRAMENTO (AP) ―
Democratic leaders in the state Assembly have sidetracked a pro-Tibet resolution that was opposed by the Chinese government.
The Assembly voted 46-28 Monday to send the resolution by Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee, a San Luis Obispo Republican, to the Rules Committee. Republicans said the move would kill the measure.
The resolution praises the Dalai Lama's "outstanding moral and religious leadership" and declares March 10 Tibet Awareness Day. March 10 was the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan revolt against Chinese rule.
The Assembly approved a virtually identical measure last year. But Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, a San Francisco Democrat, said the Legislature should let the new administration in Washington deal with China.
