San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom wants to get same-sex marriages in the city under way as soon as possible.
City officials asked the state Wednesday to let the clerk's office begin issuing gender-neutral marriage licenses the minute after the California Supreme Court's decision legalizing same-sex marriage takes effect.
The state Office of Vital Records instructed all 58 counties in California to begin issuing the licenses June 17.
The court announced Wednesday its ruling would be final June 16 at 5 p.m.the end of the state's workday.
Newsom said he hopes to keep the offices open past 5 p.m. to begin issuing the licenses immediately.
