Jackie Speier, former state Senator.
Former state Sen. Jackie Speier has announced she will run for the congressional seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Tom Lantos.
The 79-year-old Lantos said two weeks ago he would retire at the end of his term because he is battling cancer of the esophagus.
A victory by Speier would give her the seat once held by her former boss, the late Rep. Leo Ryan. Ryan was killed in 1978 during a trip to Guyana to investigate cult leader Jim Jones. Speier was seriously wounded in the same attack.
Speier chose Leo J. Ryan Park in Foster City to announce her candidacy Sunday.
Speier spent 18 years in the Legislature before she was termed out in 2006, and six years on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.
The Democratic primary race to succeed Lantos could also include state Senator Leland Yee of San Francisco.
