City hall sources told CBS 5 that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom left the city Tuesday to spend the rest of the week in Hawaii following his decision to drop out of the California governor's race.
A mayor's spokesman provided CBS 5 a copy of a memo in which the mayor appointed Supervisor Carmen Chu as acting mayor until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.
"The mayor is spending some time with his family regrouping," said Nate Ballard, a spokesman for the mayor's office.
Ballard said he could not confirm or deny that the mayor is in Hawaii.
Newsom, who propelled the debate over gay marriage but struggled to find a popular message outside the Bay Area, dropped his bid last Friday for the governor's office.
A statement issued Friday by Newsom cited time constraints and his growing family as the primary reasons for his withdrawal.
The mayor has not made any public appearances or done any media interviews since making that announcement.
