Danville officials say longtime Town Councilman Michael Shimansky has died after contracting bacterial meningitis.
Danville Mayor Newell Arnerich described the death of the 65-year-old Shimanksy as an "absolute shock."
Officials say Shimansky died Wednesday after contracting bacterial meningitis in August while visiting family in San Diego County.
Shimansky was first elected to the Danville Town Council 20 years ago, served several stints as mayor and represented Danville on several regional boards.
Shimansky is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sue Shimansky, three children and five grandchildren.
Memorial services are pending.
