At a news conference in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, Congresswoman Barbara Lee was formally named the Chair-Elect of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Lee, D-Oakland, has served on the caucus' leadership team for the past six years as Whip and First Vice Chair, according to her office.
"I plan to build upon the great leadership of our former chairs and to meet our caucus challenge of 'changing course, confronting crisis and continuing the legacy' of those who paved the way for each of our members to have the honor to serve and fight for equality, justice and peace for our African-American communities and for the entire nation," Lee said in a prepared statement.
She is taking the place of Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick, D-Mich.
The caucus' goal is to achieve greater equity for black people through programs and services in the community.
For instance, in 2007, the caucus held an economic empowerment forum in Oakland aimed at bridging the wealth gap between black people and others at a free one-day conference.
