Cloutier Sworn In As Vallejo Mayor Amid Recount
VALLEJO (CBS 5) ―
Gary Cloutier was sworn in as Vallejo's new Mayor on Tuesday, amid a recount in the city's closest election ever.
There is no telling how long he will be in office, because Cloutier only won the last tally by five votes over former Solano County Supervisor Osby Davis. A new recount began Monday.
"According to the registrar, they don't expect a change in the outcome. There's been recounts before, and they always come out exactly the same," Cloutier said.
But there's never been a waiting period like this one. Just two days before being declared the winner, Cloutier was arrested in Palm Springs on suspicion of public intoxication. He had to apologize to the voters before even taking office.
Now he's just looking forward to serving.
"I can only tell you that I find life very unpredictable, and that makes it interesting," he said, laughing. "That's all I can say about it really."
Mayor Cloutier says he has plenty of plans for time in office, even if it only lasts till Thursday when the latest recount is completed.
If the latest recount results in a tie, Cloutier says under state law he and his opponent would have to draw straws.
