CA Teachers Propose Sales Tax Hike
BURLINGAME (CBS 5 / KCBS) ―
The latest budget bailout plan comes from California teachers: a one-cent sales tax hike to regain some of the losses that are sure to become reality when the next state budget is signed into law.
David Sanchez, president of the California Teachers Association, predicted an otherwise grim future for schools that includes drastic cuts and a likely increase in class size.
"I even see the possibility of schools having to shut their doors because of a lack of money or resources left available for them to keep their doors open," said Sanchez, who vehemently opposes a proposal to shorten the school year to save money.
Instead, he supports a sales tax hike that he said could raise $5-6 billion a year for public education and keep some teachers from finding a new career.
