Legislature Considers Pay-As-You Go Insurance Plan

SACRAMENTO (CBS 5) ― There's a new proposal going through the California Legislature that would base your auto insurance premium based on how many miles you drive.

It's an option available in 34 states and one company reported it had cut premiums by 13 to 54 percent.

People who agree to tie their premiums to miles driven are likely to stay out of the car more. They save money on gas and insurance.

Opponents to the proposal worry that companies will install sophisticated GPS devices that watch where you travel and how fast.

They also say rural drivers could pay more because stores may be farther away.
