Vallejo Mayoral Candidates in Dead Heat

VALLEJO (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― Two candidates for Vallejo mayor currently have the exact same number of votes, and a winner may not be called until sometime next week.

Councilman Gary Cloutier and former county supervisor Osby David both have 5,158 votes. Cloutier would be Vallejo's first openly gay mayor and Davis would be the city's first black man to hold the seat. Elections officials said they won't be finished counting votes until at least next week.

"Last night the elections officials said that it could take just a few days, but now we're hearing that it could take until next week. There are 6,000 ballots at least county-wide that haven't been counted. We don't know how many of those are from Vallejo," said Vallejo Times Herald staff writer J.M. Brown. "They both seemed quite confident that they were going to be victorious once the votes were counted. I think they were still pretty excited from their campaign parties when I spoke to them last night."

One of the big issues the next mayor will inherit is the city's embattled relationship with the union that represents its firefighters.

"Getting the council united around that issue is going to be a big challenge for him, and then there are ongoing development projects in the city that are also contentious, so whoever it is has got a lot of work ahead of them," said Brown.
