Vallejo mayoral candidate Gary Cloutier spent nearly five hours in jail Sunday morning after he was arrested for allegedly being intoxicated in public in Palm Springs, Calif., according to Palm Springs police Sgt. Mitch Spike.
Cloutier, 45, was reportedly "staggering and could barely stand" when officers arrested him in the area of Arenas Road and Calle El Segundo at 3:44 a.m., Spike said.
Cloutier, Vallejo's vice mayor, has been locked in a near dead heat for office of mayor with former County Supervisor Osby Davis since elections November 6th elections.
Cloutier would be Vallejo's first openly gay mayor and Davis would be the city's first black man to hold the seat.
Police determined Cloutier, who was found alone and sitting in the driver's seat of a Cadillac, had been at a bar prior to his arrest.
Cloutier was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication and booked into Palm Springs Jail, according to Spike. Cloutier was released at 9:10 a.m. after promising to appear in court in Riverside County, Spike said.
Meanwhile, Solano County elections workers were still counting provisional ballots Monday afternoon to determine who will be Vallejo's next mayor.
Cloutier was leading former Solano County Supervisor Osby Davis by nine votes, with a tally of 5,710-5701 as of 4 p.m. Monday.
