The state budget crisis has taken a toll on Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's popularity. His approval rating has dipped from 60 percent to 41 percent since December, according to a Field Poll released Tuesday.
"It's looking like a very grim situation where certain tax proposals are being proposed or cuts are being proposed in popular programs. It's just not a very palatable or happy situation for most voters," said pollster Mark DiCamillo.
After enjoying broad popularity during the first two years of his administration, Schwarzenegger's approval ratings have steadily declined since 2005 on both ends of the political spectrum, DiCamillo said. "If you're a strong conservative or a strong liberal, those were the areas where the largest proportions disapproved."
Forty-eight percent of the 1,052 registered voters surveyed during the latter part of May said they disapproved of Schwarzenegger's performance. DiCamillo said Schwarzenegger's unpopularity now approached that of his predecessor, Gray Davis, in the days leading up to the recall.
The poll also found California voters dissatisfied with their legislators too. Only 30 percent said they believe the legislature is doing a good job.
