Costly safety upgrades following a fatal Christmas Day 2007 tiger attack, fewer donations and falling attendance is forcing the San Francisco Zoo to consider layoffs and reducing park hours.
The zoo indicated that cost-cutting actions are being discussed to help make up a $2.2 million revenue shortfall.
Zoo spokeswoman Lora LaMarca said the financial problems are a direct result of the tiger attack, which left one teenager dead and two others wounded.
The zoo reported that it lost $430,000 in canceled memberships after the attacks and $1.2 million in donations.
Also, attendance dropped by more than 20,800 in the 2008-2009 fiscal year.
