A zebra under medical observation since the weekend was found dead by zoo staff members Tuesday.
The zebra had been salivating while on exhibit Sunday and was being treated with common medication. A veterinarian found the animal, named Lisa, dead in her barn at 7:00 a.m. A necropsy was planned for later Tuesday.
Lisa was born in February of 1998 and arrived at the zoo a year later. Zebras in captivity can live up to forty years.
Her death comes as San Francisco continues to investigate a fatal tiger mauling on Christmas day and two near escapes of a snow leopard and a polar bear.
