Former Atlanta Falcons star Michael Vick is spending 23 months in prison for his role in an illegal dog fighting business. Meanwhile, five of the surviving dogs are being treated at a shelter in Oakland.
Authorities confiscated 49 pit bull terriers from Michael Vick's Virginian dog fighting ring. A first of its kind rescue mission deemed those dogs safe to be living with people.
Donna Reynolds with "Bad Rap," a bay area pit bull advocacy group says these five dogs at Oakland Animal services are being nursed back to health in foster care.
"In the past, dogs from dog fight busts are considered 'kennel trash,' those are the words that are used for these dogs. It is presumed that they're going to be dangerous, and out of control, that there is no hope for them," said Reynolds.
Oakland Raider's Jarrod Cooper has been volunteering at the animal shelter, where he says someone drops off a bloody fight dog at least once a week. Cooper, and some of his teammates have banded together to fund and help with a program to educate dog owners about treating their pets with care.
