For the first time in a century, steelhead trout have successfully spawned in an East Bay creek. With the help of volunteers, the little fish is making a big comeback at Stonybrook Creek in Fremont.
50 years ago, a man-made barrier prevented the steelhead trout from swimming up Stonybrook Creek to spawn. Earlier this year, volunteers gave the fish a hand, and physically carried them over the barrier. The steelhead will stay in the area until the rainy season.
