SANTA ROSA: BABY GIRAFFE BORN ON WILDLIFE PRESERVE
A baby giraffe was born on a Santa Rosa wildlife preserve early Saturday morning, a spokeswoman said.
The calf was born sometime between 1 a.m. or 2 a.m., spokeswoman Aphrodite Caserta said.
When staff came into the preserve Saturday morning the mother, a 5-year-old named Mara, was nuzzling with the calf.
While the male giraffe has yet to be christened with a name, he stands around 6 feet tall and weighs around 110 pounds, Caserta said.
He is the ninth calf to be born at the preserve.
Safari West is a 400-acre wildlife preserved started in 1989 dedicated to preservation of endangered and exotic species through breeding, education, research and public interaction, according to the organization's Web site.
