A young sea lion found wandering a busy Richmond street last week has died at the Marine Mammal Center, where it was receiving care, according to a published report late Friday.
The estimated four-month-old pup died from malnutrition, the Contra Costa Times reported.
A marine center volunteer who rescued the 30-pound critter in the early morning hours of May 21 had indicated that it appeared malnurished and was "probably just hungry" at the time of capture.
The baby sea lion was initially spotted by police waddling down a stretch of the Richmond Parkway after it apparently lost its way from the San Francisco Bay.
Police nicknamed it Moody, in honor of a Richmond officer who died last year, after it hid beneath a police cruiser in an attempt to escape capture.
Following the ordeal, Moody was taken to the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito for rest and feeding -- with the hopes that it would soon be able to return to the sea.
Experts said it is not unusual for sea lion pups to go wandering when they are suffering from malnourishment.
