Wandering Sea Lion Pup Gets Lost In Richmond

RICHMOND (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ― A young sea lion was safely rescued Thursday after he apparently lost his way from the San Francisco Bay and police found the 30-pound critter waddling down a busy Richmond street.

Police said the 3-foot-long sea lion wandered onto the Richmond Parkway near Giant Road about 1:20 a.m. before a volunteer with the Marine Mammal Center was able to capture it.

The estimated four-month-old sea lion pup -- nicknamed Moody in honor of a Richmond officer who died last year -- hid beneath a police cruiser near Richmond Parkway and Goodrick Avenue and managed to escape capture for a time.

After evading rescuers, Moody was finally caught, wrapped in a towel and shuttled off to the center in Sausalito.

Center spokeswoman Shelbi Stoudt said the youngster was not injured, just lost and a little scared.

Rescuers said Moody appeared malnourished, and will be kept at the center for rest and feeding for a couple of days before being returned to the sea.

Stoudt said sea lion pups usually wander when they are malnourished or have neurological problems but in this case the baby was "probably just hungry."
