Prop. 2 Looks To Improve Farm Animal Treatment
Noelle Walker, Reporting
PETALUMA (CBS 5) ―
California voters will get to decide if the state's farm animals should receive better treatment, with a ballot measure this November.
Proposition 2 bans keeping egg-laying chickens, calves raised for veal or gestating pigs in cages that they can't turn around, stretch limbs, stand or lie down.
"We would never force our pets to live in filthy cramped cages, and we shouldn't force animals to endure it either," said Karin Olsson of the Yes on 2 Campaign. "All animals, including those raised for food deserve humane treatment."
But opponents of Proposition 2 say it would come at a high price. They say it would drain 3,400 jobs and $615 million from the California economy. Opponents also say it would lead to an egg shortage and higher prices.
Arizona, Colorado, Florida and Oregon have similar laws regulating the conditions for farm animals.
