Hard Times For Fido; Pet Food Donations Sought

(BCN) The Marin Humane Society is asking for pet food donations to help seniors care for their animal companions during the holiday season, a society spokeswoman said.

Carrie Harrington, of the society, said she always needs more pet food and basic supplies during holidays but this year she is particularly concerned because of the economic crisis.

"The key thing is that in these hard economic times, a lot of people will have to give up their pets and we want to keep them together," Harrington said.

The humane society provides assistance to more than 200 low-income seniors and disabled clients and their pets in times of need.

Harrington said the donations in some cases help seniors avoid having to give up their only companion.

Typically the society receives thousands of dollars in donations and pet supplies, and Harrington said she is grateful for every bit of it.

Donations can be delivered to the Marin Humane Society at 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd. in Novato.
