Pelicans Dying In Fishing Lines Off Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ (AP) ― Large numbers of brown pelicans are getting hurt, or in some cases dying, after getting tangled in fishing lines along the Santa Cruz coast.

Up to 90 injured pelicans are being treated at the Fairfield-based International Bird Rescue Research Center, where director Jay Holcomb says most of the pelicans survive.

Hundreds of pelicans began diving for anchovies off Seacliff State Beach and the Capitola Wharf two weeks ago and some got snagged by fishing lines. Authorities then closed the Seacliff pier and Capitola wharf to fishing.
