Officers Shoot Pit Bull; Find Pot In Antioch Home

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

ANTIOCH (BCN) ― Sheriff's detectives were forced to shoot a pit bull in Antioch Wednesday when its owner, who was later arrested on drug charges, was unable to keep his dog from attacking one of the officers.

Narcotics detectives went to the home in the 3100 block of Barmouth Drive to serve a search warrant, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office.

Officers reported knocking on the home's front door and identifying themselves.

When there was no response, the officers forced entry to the home and were confronted by an aggressive 80-pound pit bull, according to the sheriff's office.

The pit bull's owner, Antioch resident Darrel Silva, 39, was not able to control the animal. When the dog moved to attack an investigating sergeant, it was shot four times and killed.

Detectives found an indoor marijuana growing operation at the residence and seized more than 600 pot plants worth around $60,000 by sheriff's office estimates.

Silva was arrested for cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale and unauthorized connection to a power line. His bail was set at $120,000.
