Authorities in Danville continued increased patrols Wednesday in the area of Osage Station Park after a mountain lion was spotted near the east side of the park one day prior.
Maintenance workers spotted the cat, which they estimated at about 90 to 100 pounds, in San Ramon Creek at 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to Danville police.
The animal did not display any aggressive behavior and moved away down the creek, police reported.
Responding officers were not able to locate the cat, but area schools were notified to limit student access to the park this week. In addition, the park will now be closed from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. until further notice.
The California Department of Fish and Game was monitoring the area in an attempt to locate the cat, and police and schools notified residents and parents about the sighting.
Police asked anyone who sees a mountain lion to call 911 or Danville police at (925) 820-2144.
Danville is the second East Bay community to experience mountain lion sightings recently.
Last week, Hayward police warned that city's residents about a mountain lion that was seen roaming near homes in a neighborhood adjacent to a large open space in the East Bay hills.
After the
resident videotaped the big cat, state wildlife officials confirmed that it was a mountain lion and set a trap in the hopes of catching the animal. The trapping effort was unsuccessful.
